I would love to know if we can take over those mines too! Too my knowledge you can only attack and destroy another players structure. You cannot usurp control of it without building your own. The iron is there for everyone, not just someone who wants to plant a base next to it and claim it for themselves. You could mine near the barracks with thralls, but if its iron, the enemy will be quiet strong. So when a player turns up they will render and attack your miner. Your thrall probably won't mine deep inside the mine either, so just the rocks outside. If its in desert they will pick up radiation as well.There are mining pits that you can automine near volcano. You need to unlock exploiting technique and place mine parts there. Not done it myself as guessing someone already done it there.
