Born in Japan from the noble intention of a retired army officer Kihachiro Onitsuka, he wanted to do something good for the future of the Japanese youth after Japan was decimated from six long years of World War 2. Being occupied by the allied forces and Americans in 1945, the American fabric was weaved in Japanese culture until Japan gained independence in 1952. Amongst the American culture, sports like baseball and basketball were rejoiced by the youth and betting on this growth, Kihachiro Onitsuka founded Onitsuka Co. which is now known as Asics. The brand breakthrough came with revolutionizing basketball shoes for the Japanese basketball team and the success led to the Onitsuka Tigers being used at the Olympics. Gradually, Asics running shoes came into being after the brand expanded to multiple sports including running. The legendary ‘Mexico 66’ was designed for the Mexican Olympics pre-trials held in 1966 and it debuted the iconic tiger stripe which is found on all Asics shoes today. It gathered a cult following and influenced the brand's sneaker presence in a great way. In 1990, Asics sneakers introduced the Gel-Lyte III that garnered immense success and which today any sneakerhead can identify and cherish the possession of a pair.
